On Cedar, Graham, Béluga and Narval, you can do client-server rendering on both CPUs (in software) and GPUs (hardware acceleration). Please use the tabs below to select the remote system.Ĭlient-server visualization on Cedar, Graham, Béluga and Narval For example, to use ParaView server version 5.10.0 on the cluster, you need client version 5.10.x on your computer. NOTE 2: ParaView requires the same major version on the local client and the remote host this prevents incompatibility that typically shows as a failed handshake when establishing the client-server connection. Experiment with the threshold to find a suitable value. If you set it to 0MB, all rendering will be remote including rotation, so you will really be using the cluster resources for everything, which is good for large data processing but not so good for interactivity. If you set it to default (20MB) or similar, small rendering will be done on your computer's GPU, the rotation with a mouse will be fast, but anything modestly intensive (under 20MB) will be shipped to your computer and (depending on your connection) visualization might be slow. NOTE 1: An important setting in ParaView's preferences is Render View -> Remote/Parallel Rendering Options -> Remote Render Threshold.

Highlights include the football stadium and the baseball park. When looking back (or towards) the city, take some time to find landmarks that you wouldn’t otherwise see when you’re in Seattle. Make sure to sit towards the front of the ferry on both rides – one will provide a spectacular view of the island as you approach and the other will provide a beautiful view of Seattle. The star of this commute is the view and you don’t want to miss a minute. However, I highly recommend that you grab any snacks you want and then head to the top of the ferry and sit on one of the benches surrounding the deck. Ferry food includes Seattle staples such Beecher’s mac and cheese, Ivar’s chowder and Seahawks cookies as well as Seattle-made beer and wine. If you find its raining outside, the second floor is indoors and includes plenty of seating, as well as a café that serves a wide variety of Seattle food (a good place to grab a bite if you haven’t already had your fill). Once you board the ferry, you can either sit indoors or outdoors. It’s also worth it to go down to the car deck and see how they lined the cars on their own floor.) The price is a bit more expensive but having a car will allow you to see more of the Island if wanted (note that they don’t allow cars that are rented through apps, such as Lime or Uber). Keep your ticket stub close, as you will need it to reboard.Ĭars are allowed on the ferry at a higher cost (we had a lot of fun watching them load on and off. However, you don’t need a return ticket from Bainbridge Island, which is a fancy way of saying that your ticket price is round-trip. While pricing can vary for the ferry, it cost us $8.50 per person to cross the Sound ( check here to see current rates). Bainbridge is also a very dog-friendly area, with water bowls and free treats being offered at various locations throughout downtown. The ferry allows pets (a few very friendly dogs approached us during our rides), so you can bring your pup along for the ride. so make sure to grab a copy of the schedule when you’re buying your ticket so you’re not late when heading back (because I don’t know about you but the last thing I would want is to be stuck on an island for the night □) The ferry schedule is located on the Washington State Department of Transportation website. However, the terminal does get more and more crowded closer to departure time, so being there early ensures that you can have a seat and/or get to your preferred location on the ferry. Once the ferry arrives, the staff takes a few minutes to offboard existing passengers before allowing ticketholders to board. No reservations are accepted beforehand, and tickets are “first-come, first-served,” so make sure to get there early enough to get your ticket and get in line. To get on the ferry, you must purchase a ticket at the pier. Bainbridge is a nautical town that allows you to get away from the hustle and bustle of Seattle. When doing research, I read that Bainbridge is frequently referred to as the “ Nantucket of the West,” and I can see where that term comes from. The town is beautiful, and as I said above, is packed with plenty of things to do. However, once you step foot in the town, you’ll realize why Bainbridge is used as a backdrop in so many stories so frequently. Why you should visit Bainbridgeīainbridge Island isn’t somewhere that you should only visit if you’ve read about it in books or seen it on TV. From a downtown area full of shopping, plenty of restaurants, breweries, and wineries (and even a quilting shop for my crafty mother), we found that there were plenty of things to do, see and eat, and we knew it would be a great little town to walk around for a few hours. When researching Bainbridge, we saw that there was so much to do. When we realized Bainbridge Island was around the corner. This was when we had one of those “Aha!” epiphany moments So, with four or so hours to waste until the second half of our group was back, what were we to do? No museums interested us, no sports teams were in town and we were going to go hiking and drink some local beer later in the day. We had already explored Pike’s Place, eaten plenty of food and walked around the Waterfront area. And when David, my brother, and my Dad headed to the Museum of Flight after lunch, my Mom, sister and I were left without anything else to do. We were visiting Seattle with most of my family. Basic moves still function much the same as we've experienced in the past. The action is fast, the variety of punches and animations are all well done, and the fundamental arcade boxing engine itself does indeed come close to the excellence achieved by even Punch-Out! so many years before. Gameplay As we've experienced in the past with this title, slipping on the gloves and tossing around our cel-shaded dukes in Black & Bruised is a bout of mixed results. It's nothing big, sure, but such little touches go a long way to keeping things subliminally stimulating, and such little touches work nicely here in Black & Bruised. Perhaps one of the best presentation touches is the good use of voiceovers in the menus, cutscenes, and even the practice tutorial. Digital Fiction even added a few subtle touches that most wouldn't notice for instance, every time you select a player, his or her facial expression randomly changes. Still, it's a motley crew that players should have no problems finding a favorite fighter among for whooping the tar out of the rest.Īs the rest of the package goes, the menus are all clean, bright and full of life and sound. Others such as "Jumping Janet" or "Tiny," the obviously largest boxer in the game, leave more to be desired. Or you've got "Micky McFist," the scrappy Irish brawler with the cloverleaf tattoo on his chest - something of an orange-haired version of Brad Pitt from Snatch. With his lime green pointy stripes, he taunts his opponents via witty quips of burritos and ass-whippings. Take, for instance, our man known as "El Luchador." This masked Spanish fly appears to be the lovechild of a tiger and a melon. Each character practically leaps from the canvas and comes to life with distinctive names, personalities, costumes, fighting styles, background music and voiceovers. It's not hard to visualize the concept art that must have been adoringly sketched and later rubber-stamped by the production team in designing the game. And to a large degree, Digital Fiction succeeded in infusing the title with exactly that: personality, flair and top-notch presentation. It's been said time and again that the cel-shaded look and overabundance of personality found in B&B was influenced from the classic Nintendo Punch-Out! franchise of years past. Presentation From the beginning, Majesco knew that Black & Bruised would be stylish at its core. Simulation and diehard boxing fans? Well, this game is not for you. And in a casual sense, Black and Bruised is a fun party game that casual gamers and first-time players will enjoy. While Black & Bruised is no Super Punch-Out, it's the closest any game has come to emulating it in some time. In its heart of hearts, we believe the team wanted to create a game in that same mold, delivering kooky characters and silly scenarios and making games fun in the old sense of the word. Canadian developer Digital Fiction, however, yearns for those old days. Synfig Studio One of the most familiar reasons people want an alternative to Toon Boom is the cost. Try to do the same animation in both software's and see which one makes the most sense to you and seems the most intuitive. Krita Final Word Best Toon Boom Alternatives 1. If you're only interested in 2D stuff though then Blender is overkill since it's essentially a full workflow production tool for hobbyists.Īll things considered I'd recommend both. Rigging and easier tweening makes it easy to get simple animations put together quickly. Compare price, features, and reviews of the software side-by-side to make the best choice for your business. OT is still a fantastic piece of software and if you're familiar with/enjoy frame by frame animation then it's good software, but definitely does have some crashing issues that make saving every couple minutes a good call.īlenders 2D features are fairly new (being massively redone as of 2.80, with great additions in 2.81 and 2.82, with 2.83 looking super promising) but quite powerful. Toon Boom Harmony using this comparison chart. Opentoonz has a pretty big learning curve, and can be daunting for someone new to animation. In Blender reusing assets is just File -> Append and then picking the save file you wanna pick from. Making stuff in OT and then wanting to use the same stuff in a separate scene or project is tedious and in my experience requires repetitive setup (for bone rigs specifically) and working with sub x-sheets for grouped characters is much harder to sync with audio, especially when working with multiple of them. The biggest benefit of Blender for 2D stuff that I found is asset re-use. Toon Boom Harmony using this comparison chart. Everynyan 2049, 24 fps animation made in krita.5.1. Harmony and Animate Pro can do hand drawn animation fine as well but Ive personally never felt completely comfortable drawing with the vector lines. TVPaint is just a really great piece of software if hand drawn animation is the main focus. The material system that Blender uses is also a bit more intuitive to me than the palette system that OT uses. TV Paint vs Toon Boom Harmony/Animate Pro. Toon Boom Producer using this comparison chart. Rigging a 2d character for basic cutout/puppet animation is a lot faster in Blender. I've made several short animations with both and in my opinion Blender is better for "lazy" animation. Installers (Windows/macOS/Linux 64bit) - ġ.) Hypercapitalism has led to the world being dominated by two megacorporations, competing for the number one spot. The intro, and more so the manual, present the world of Microcosm as one of a high tech but harsh life. Playing it and fully understanding the experience remains out of reach. My experience of Microcosm is limited to reading about it and watching videos of it, which only cover the start of the game, are frequently of different versions, and in some cases are mediated by someone talking about why it’s one of the worst games ever. Achieving an authentic 1994 PC setup would be a commitment beyond that of equivalent consoles on several levels. I could buy a second-hand copy of the game on CD, but even if I solved the problem of my laptop not having a CD drive, presumably I would find exactly the same result. I can’t get past that point or find any clue of how I could fix it. I downloaded a copy of it from the Internet Archive instead, and reacquainting myself with DOS commands on an emulator I managed to get through the installation process, do the set up, see the Psygnosis logo and… nothing more. There is a Microcosm on Steam, but it’s not this one. Unlike many of the PC games I’m covering from this era, though, it is not possible to buy Microcosm now. Microcosm was popular enough to be a best-seller at the time, and was pioneering enough to be reasonably considered as pretty important. Sony carries on putting out new Lemmings games, awful microtransactions and all, but doesn’t have much interest in keeping less lasting successes available. Psygnosis were later absorbed by Sony and then eventually shut down in 2012. Microcosm and early success with CD-ROM gaming in Japan was enough to get Psygnosis signed up by Sony to work on games for their PlayStation (on which much more soon). Psygnosis were a long-standing British success story, formed in the mid-’80s and responsible for publishing Lemmings. Microcosm is the preservation of popular games history in microcosm. There are branching paths, but when neither branch offers anything interesting that’s not much of a plus. Once you get to the game bit of the game, it’s another marginally interactive shooter on rails, without even the style of Rebel Assault. MegaRace’s cinematics were camp Microcosm’s are just crap. Damien McFerran’s delightful retrospective of the game in Eurogamer, with interviews from the developers, highlights that one of the characters was played by a future Oscar winner… just not for acting. And maybe it was only on the CD32 version and not the DOS one? They also used it to create a lengthy cinematic introduction complete with real actors. Psygnosis used the possibilities of the CD-ROM to provide music from Rick Wakeman, except that it doesn’t actually play during gameplay. The game took a while longer to get to the PC and back to the UK where it had been developed. It’s a little unfair on it that we come to it so late, making it look like it’s taking after Rebel Assault and MegaRace when in fact it was before them, but its initial release was on Fujitsu’s FM Towns Marty console, which didn’t make it out of Japan. That’s partly because it was influential and early. Microcosm is the CD-ROM FMV game in microcosm. Rather than having fixed working hours, creators are self-regulating as streaming hours and upload times demand certain patterns to increase one’s following and make a living, while as creators, they must also try to understand their audience and the platform algorithm. Rather than being liberated, creators are restricted by a new form of time that offers the possibilities of freedom within the confines of the platform. We argue that while there is the illusion that audiences are closer than ever to the content creator in terms of engagement, at the same time, they are abstracted through platform analytics, meaning that they are reduced to statistics provided to content creators. Findingsīased on the data, we discuss two concepts, abstract audiences and platform time, which helped us to understand platform–labor relations. In the process, ByteDance helped contact these users. The users gave their consent to disclose their identity. For this paper, after briefly reading the survey results, we selected 50 users for in-depth interviews. A survey questionnaire was sent to these users during one week in July 2019, and 2375 users responded to the survey. Users with more than 10,000 followers were identified so as to select users who had sufficient activities and strong motivation to operate their short video channel. This study is a collaboration between Douyin of ByteDance, whose headquarters are in Beijing, and a team of researchers. Using TikTok in China as our point of departure, we discuss the role of platform time and the abstracted audience. The platformization of everyday life means a changing relation to what we do in our daily lives, not only in China, but in every country in which digital platforms are becoming more relevant by the day. This article explores how platforms reorganize our sense of everyday life. |
